Guess what Koreans love. Literature! They love novels and poems and essays. They celebrate not only writers and poets of national and international fame like Shakespeare, Mark Twain, and Dostoyevsky, but local and regional writers and poets. They attend book fairs and poetry readings. They also join literary circles (hundreds, or maybe thousands of them around the country) and would rather do the writing themselves.

One example of literature halls celebrating a writer or poet and paying tribute to his or her literary achievements is the Lee Hyoseok Literature Hall in Pyeongchang-Gun, Gangwon-Do. The Hall celebrates and pays tribute to writer (poet and essayist too) Lee Hyoseok (이효석, 1907-42), most famous for his short story titled ‘Around the Time when Buckwheat Flowers Bloom’ (메밀꽃 필 무렵). The Hall and the area hold the Lee Hyoseok Literature Festival and the Buckwheat Flower Festival in September. It’s a beautiful tourist attraction. You can check out the Lee Hyoseok Literature Hall and enjoy the fall foliage of the gorgeous Gangwon-Do (Province), and, don’t miss this out, taste the many different kinds of buckwheat dishes, including buckwheat noodles (메밀국수) and pancakes (메밀전).
